What We Can Learn About Work From The Lady Liberty
Every day on my two minute commute on my way back from home(okay, maybe 8 minutes thanks to the two ridiculous red lights), I see this person wearing the Lady Liberty costume holding a sign that says, “Honk if you love liberty”. Sometimes, I do. “Honk! Honk!”, I go. This person, usually after hearing my honk, seems pretty revitalized and starts dancing or fist pumping (leading me to believe there are two different people doing this job). The employer is Liberty Tax, from the nearest shopping center here.
This wouldn’t usually be so bad, after all, it’s an “easy” job. Hold a sign and point to it as cars pass by. Wrong! This person is battling the pile high of snow, the balls shrinkingly cold gust of wind (I meant every word I just said), dressed in a ridiculous costume, and probably earning barely $8.00-$10.00 / hr, part-time with no benefits.
I would imagine such a job would be for a high-school chump, looking to make a “quick, few dollars”. Apparently, that’s not the case. I can’t confirm this but I believe I saw an older lady (thanks to her struggle against heavy breeze to put her Lady Liberty headpiece back on).
Now imagine that lady being your mother.
Working for “The Man” isn’t for chumps. If you’re busting your ass out there to make ends meet, working a 9 to 5 you hate to fulfill your responsibilities, you’re one of the hard-core. You’re the ones that will humble us youngsters and show us what hard work truly means.
What You Should Learn From The Lady Liberty
As humbling as it is to come across such situations, it only builds my drive to not only work harder, but smarter. You hate your job? A lot of people do. Start doing something on the side that yields you extra income so that you can get out of this situation. One day soon, it will snowball into something bigger.
What You Should Do Right Now To Change Your Life
There isn’t an exact plan of what you should do right now to change your life, so choose one of the following: start and commit to a blog, contact someone who’s already doing what you’re trying to do, take a course, step back and re-evaluate your goals, hire a writer, hire a programmer, create your first niche website.
The one thing you shouldn’t do is read all of the above and say, “That sounds great, but meh, maybe later.” For months I wanted to open a blog and I just couldn’t find a way to do it. Until that one week in November. It took maybe 2-3 hours (in a week), and so Experiments In Passive Income was born. This blog has introduced me to so many people online and I know I can always turn to them for advice. It’s the trigger that helps me evaluate my strategies time and time again.
You Choose
You can be like Lady Liberty lady out there working hard; there is nothing wrong with that. With that type of job, just remember that you will always need to be physically present at the job site.
However, if you’re reading this, then you have access to your brain, a computer, and a decent connection. And holy crap, that’s all you need to start your path to passive income (/online business/automated online busines/[insert whatever gels with you here). Why not build an income stream that will always yield great income with minimal effort?
At the end of the day, ask yourself: “What have I done today to change my life in the next six months?”
So, tell me, what have you done today to change your life in the next six months?
Whoaaa! You haven't subscribed??
Here I am, busting my butt, to bring you results of all these experiments I'm conducting (go on, see the beaker?) It'd be awesome if you subscribe to my RSS feed. See where it says 'Subscribe' with the orange RSS image next to the Twitter birdie? OH yeah, c'mon, do it ;)

Hi! My name is Moon Hussain and I'm here to discuss all the strategies that I'll be experimenting with to earn passive income.
It’s a blessing and a curse that the majority of people are out there like lady liberty… working for a buck and not being aware or open to the idea that there are other ways. I honestly wonder how many people understand the concepts we talk about or even have a desire to learn.
I talked to one of my college buddies about 2 years ago when I started learning html and talked to him about the possibility of working remotely (which is still my main motivator) and he was like “yea, great, but sounds like a lot of work.” He’s currently sitting in a call center, still with no desire to learn anything else… odd to me.
We also have similar people here in Waikiki who hand out promotions for the local clubs and in particular a popular shooting range (I guess they don’t have those in Japan?) It’s sad to see these folks who could be my grandparents working for nearly the same job you described. I suppose at least here they have warm weather.
Ryan @ Planting Dollars´s last blog ..Why Ideas are Like Sperm
Yeah Ryan,
There is nothing more heartbreaking (for me) to watch older people have to work jobs that I’d easily “turn my nose up” to. Selling newspapers, working at McDonald’s, etc. It takes a lot of heart to do all of that, and I can commend it. I guess the important thing is to learn from people and to motivate yourself to take yourself to better heights.
I had a call center customer serv job for a web hosting company when I started out a couple of years ago–worst job I hope I’ll ever have. I will never go back to that! Damn, thanks for motivating me on a Monday, haha.
Hey Moon, great post first off.
I haven’t done anything today as I just woke up but yesterday I did finish reading a book and also was able to finally get my car unstuck. Please read Wednesday’s post on my blog for more on that.
You’re spot on here, if you want to get ahead and have dreams, desires, goals or anything, just get out there and do something about it. Figure out how. Don’t let negative influence stop you and actually, more importantly let that negative influence inspire you to do it in the first place.
I think a lot of people think they want something but it’s all just what everyone else has and they don’t think they could ever get it anyway.
Again, just do something about it!

Eric´s last blog ..Lets Help Each Other: Monthly Experience (January – February)
Eric,
I’ll check it out today. Some days are just littered with chores (groceries, car maintenance, bills, blah, blah, blah), which leaves hardly any time for other ventures. I know of a couple of people who thought I could never land a job that pays me as much as they do. That wasn’t an insult, but rather small thinking. They only know people at their own pay grade, so how could this be a reality?
I’ve seen the proof and I’m going to reach out and live life on my own terms. They probably don’t think that’s possible, and that’s fine, I don’t mind opening doors
There will always be people who don’t think some things are possible… That’s partly what makes those things possible because it takes open minds to open doors.
I love it, what can I do today to change my life six months from now… awesome post!
Thanks Maren. Nice to know you like!
