The “Secrets” To Landing Guest Posts
As you read this, I am busy creating a few guest posts which I hope will be posted within a few days of each other. I hope to bring in more readers to Experiments In Passive Income and to grow the community so we can have more perspective. In the last few weeks, I have found many bloggers out there who are doing what I’m doing and are even better at it. So in hopes of forging new connections and gaining a few more readers, I thought I’d start out the week about sharing my “secret” to landing guest posts.
Keep in mind I have not presented my material to these bloggers, but they are open to posting my work as long as both parties are satisfied. So let’s start!
Make Connections
You better learn to love socializing, especially if you have a blog. Make comments on the regular blogs you visit, comment back to your visitors, follow your readers’ links, follow other blog’s readers’ links…. go in as many circles as you want, but comment the hell away. When I notice a “special” blog, I delve even deeper and try to leave an impression on the blogger by leaving 2-3 comments. If I can’t do that, I try to leave that many comments in the first week.
Part of making these connections is to follow these people on Twitter. Re-tweet their tweets if you think they are worthy, and they’ll appreciate that and usually notice what you’ve done for them (if they’re following you). Also, it always helps to reply back to them from time to time to catch their eye.
A few weeks of this and you will know great people out there who are willing to lend you a hand. Why not do the same in return?
Keep An Eye Out For Key Opportunities
I recently tweeted that I was looking for opportunities to guest blog and immediately got a couple of responses. From there, we have been emailing and discussing topics (amongst other things). In fact, The InfoPreneur tweeted about being interested in guest bloggers contacting him. Check out his post about working with him. Don’t let these golden opportunities pass you by!
ASK! ASK AWAY!
Dear God, go to the blogs you are interested in guest blogging for and contact them using their email address or the contact form. What’s the harm? If you’re a new blogger, I don’t suggest asking Darren of ProBlogger right away, but why not ask all these bloggers around you who are doing what you’re trying to do? What’s the worst that can happen? A “no”? I haven’t received one yet, but if I do, the hell with it, I’ll move on.
There. Those are the “secrets” to landing guest posts. Pretty disappointing, huh? As you get older, you’ll find out that these “secrets” really aren’t anything, but that everything boils down to you: you taking a series of actions.
Have you done any guest posting? What strategies have you used to land some guest post spots?
Whoaaa! You haven't subscribed??
Here I am, busting my butt, to bring you results of all these experiments I'm conducting (go on, see the beaker?) It'd be awesome if you subscribe to my RSS feed. See where it says 'Subscribe' with the orange RSS image next to the Twitter birdie? OH yeah, c'mon, do it ;)

Hi! My name is Moon Hussain and I'm here to discuss all the strategies that I'll be experimenting with to earn passive income.
I think the tweeting is interesting. I have not had too many problems asking others if I can guest post, just by sending them an email. My problem is finding the time to write the guest posts.
BTW – You are welcome to guest post on my site anytime you like if you want!

I’m running into the same “problem”, John. It’s fun connecting with other bloggers and to compare their styles of writing to your own. I’m touched and would love to do a guest post for you!
Thanks John. Will contact you soon!
Sounds good! Maybe we can exchange guest posts? Let me know.

Sure! I have to keep my committments so far, but I should be able to come up with something next week.
I’d love to have you post here. Will contact you through email.
This is solid advice Moon. I also think that a good method is to write out a bunch of guest posts on a variety of topics before contacting potential sites. This way, if they do agree or would like a sample post idea, we have material ready to send to them. And if we can’t find another blog to post them on, well, at least we have a few more posts already written for our own blog!
Earl´s last blog ..A Night Of Miracles In Cancun
Wonderful suggestion, Earl. I kind of wish I had done that, but the hardest part is writing those extra guest posts on the side. Plus, you want it to be your best work…
We’ll see what comes out of all of this. Thanks for chiming in, Earl.
Guest posting is the next thing I’d like to start doing with my blog (my blog is only a month or so old). These tips are great! I will definitely use them when I decide to start doing some guest posting!
Adrienne´s last blog ..Prepare for Life or Live Life Now?
Adrienne,
I would write a couple of (guest) posts and then contact other people, otherwise if you’re anticipating 3-4 guest posts, it can be overwhelming to come up with the material asap.
G’luck!
I honestly believe a lot of it comes down to just getting out there and doing it. Get to know people and then write something and ask them if they would post it up on their blog for you. If they say no, oh well, try again with someone else or write up something else for that same blog.
The only way to not get this is to do nothing at all.
There’s many tricks and tips out there but ultimately your best one is just doing something vs. doing nothing.
Eric´s last blog ..The Reason Nobody Knows That All They Want Is No Money
Eric,
You’re right. It all comes down to if you’re going to take any action. If you sit there, doubting yourself time after time, and never reaching out, it’ll never happen.
Moon,
A great post and very inviting. I like how you’ve suggest a very straight forward style. It’s certainly worth a try, after all the worst that can happen is, No.
Thanks for sharing this post.
Regards

Exactly, Paul
I’ve gotten 1 guest post under my belt and getting close to finishing another. I might be moving at a snail’s pace, but at least I am!
