Had I Known How Much Effort This Blog Would Require, It Wouldn’t Exist Today
Last November, I was just like you: trying to find ways to earn income online. I was frustrated, lost, confused. After months of deliberation, EIP was born over the span of 4 days and about 5 hours of work. I chose a free theme that seems to be working well, registered a domain name through NameCheap and off I went. EIP exists to motivate myself to find ways of making passive income online. The information that I learn from my experiments is meant to help me and you.
If I had known last November that I would have to leave over 3500 comments in a span of 5 months and write fresh content three times a week, Experiments In Passive Income would not exist today.
If I had known that I would be leaving 20-50 comments every day to get Experiments In Passive Income anywhere on top of writing original content three times a week, Experiments In Passive Income would not exist today.
What the Hell is She Trying To Say?
Understand this: if you think that this blog is even partially successful, then know that it was never planned. If you had asked me a year ago if I’d consider having a blog, I would’ve thought you were being ridiculous. In a way, this blog is like a great present that I stumbled onto. It has become more than a “blog”; it is the catalyst that I have needed for so long to make progress in my life.
EIP has a long way to go but it has helped me define my journey. Starting off, I never knew that I would be taking the steps that I am today and that was less than 6 months ago.
If you’ve made plans for the next 2 years or more, you’re doing it wrong. You don’t know much beyond 6 months or maybe a year, so why plan for something so far away?
Often so many of us look at what we think is the “required work” for something we’d like to do, exhaust ourselves with these thoughts and kill our own project before we have ever started on them. In essence, we are our own dream killers. Don’t be one of those people!
The Best Things In Life Occur Without Planning!
I said it. Had I not created EIP, I wouldn’t be experimenting with creating passive income online. I wouldn’t be learning about SEO, search engines in general, you know, the good stuff! Companies pay a ton of money to rank high in search engines. Businesses are interested in increasing their revenue.
If my passive income experiments fail, which I am confident they won’t, I am still learning really useful skills.
Apparently the best things in life happen without planning. For me, that includes the birth of EIP and creating an affiliate mini-site within a span of hours. I didn’t plan on these things. When I launched them, neither were perfect. I tweaked them along the way and still do.
But I’m Not Like You
If you can’t manage a blog, then you’re probably not going to do a whole lot online. No matter what though, whatever you do right now, whether you’re a doctor, a real estate agent, a therapist, a dog walker, you haven’t maximized your potential unless you are utilizing the web.
You can earn money in a whole new way–you can gain clients and sales on auto pilot.
Commit to something you are interested it. Let it open doors for you.
I am interested in making money online, in setting passive income streams online and living life on my terms. That is how I know that EIP will go far. Digging deeper than that though, I have realized my passion for learning about SEO and a ton of other stuff.
I was like you. After all, I’m no Glen Allsopp or John Chow.
Only, one day, something happened and I took a series of actions and now, here I am. Not a lot of money in the bank but comfortable enough to believe in myself and quit my job.
You can always work for others but why not carve out your own piece of the pie and live life on your terms?
On a side note, for the longest time, I hesitated starting this blog or any others. After all, all those blogs look so professional, all these writers seemed to be such “experts”. How could I think of churning out content three times a week? The thought was terrifying.
Now, I could care less. I take it one day at a time. That’s what keeps this blog relevant.
Back to the original point…
Had I Known How Much Effort This Blog Would Require, It Wouldn’t Exist Today
Let’s see. If I had guessed the amount of work I needed to put into EIP would have required about a couple of hours a day at least (that’s without my side projects that help churn out the content!), it wouldn’t exist today.
If it didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have experimented with passive income streams online.
If I hadn’t experimented with passive income streams online, I wouldn’t know that making money online was truly possible.
If I didn’t think making money online was possible, I wouldn’t be quitting my job.
If I wasn’t quitting my job soon, I’d either be staying here unhappily or I’d be looking for another 9-5 which would be stressful and might have left me in the same path of unhappiness.
In Summary…
Where is this all coming from? From the steps that I have recently taken and talking and watching other people live their lives, unhappy but committed to leaving it all the same. I have friends who think they are locked in place because they don’t believe in themselves. They don’t believe they’ll ever do better than what they are doing now. Maybe that’s you or maybe you’re in limbo.
If you’re unhappy with where you are, do something today. If you do nothing, in 6 months, 1 year, then 5 years and so on, you’ll still be where you are in life right now.
Screw “planning for the future” and do something now.

Hi! My name is Moon Hussain and I'm here to share all the strategies that I'll be experimenting with to earn passive income.
Great post Moon.
Action! Decision is what separates dreamers from doers. Some don’t even dream.
I like you Moon had no clue what this took. I continue to learn so much everyday. Half of the terms I know inside out were Greek to me last year.
If you would have told me I would have 11,000 twitter followers I would have told you to head back to Mars. It happened because of an act of faith. This is the way life works when you take decisive action. You receive the tools of your trade along the way.
Ryan´s last blog ..Don’t Share Your Money Problems with Me, I Don’t Want Them
Ryan, it’s incredible, isn’t it? I am learning stuff every day and I’m really having fun messing with search engine optimization and watching my affiliate site rank. 11k? Maybe I can set that as a goal once I”m completely finished here. Keep up the good work
Definitely agree with you. I started my online business 4 months ago and if I knew all the things I would have to do to get to where I am now (still have another week left of work before it officially ‘launches’) I doubt I would have made the leap.
What’s also important to note is that few of us have all the answers before we start. Before I started I always ‘knew’ I would fail because I didn’t know exactly what I was doing. However, jumping into the deep end before you know how to swim makes you learn quickly! From what I have learned (and from the mistakes I have made) I am now confident that I can now create an online business within 1 weekend – instead of 4 months. I have learned a lot of valuable lessons; however, like you, even though these are valuable skills, I know I will not fail.
People think they need financial backing, a mentor to hold their hand, or any number of crutches. However, the only thing you really need is action.
Richard Riley´s last blog ..Hard Knock Life
You’re right. I’ve spent the last decade (even in university) looking for mentors and the kind of help that just doesn’t exist. Make your own mistakes, get over it, and keep moving. That’s all you can do.
Just checked out your site, Richard. Can I ask how you’ve setup the “shop” part? I know you’re using WP but are you using a WP plugin of sorts?
Can’t wait to see your progress in another 4 months! Keep us updated here.
Hey Moon,
If I had known…. yeah, I think we all go through that period when we are looking back on our lives. So much has changed in the last half-year for you. It’s great that instead of stewing and wondering what to do, you took action. Now, you are slowly reaping those rewards. Maybe not so much monetarily, but as you say, the skills you are learning now that can last you a lifetime.
“best things in life happen without planning” –> truer words were never spoken. Great advice. Although, we can fool ourselves into thinking we have it all planned out, life usually throws us a few curveballs, just to keep it interesting

Karen,
Yep, I don’t want to keep harping on what I’ve done. Quitting your job isn’t always the solution but if you are unhappy with something, hopefully you’ll take some action. Or you’ll be living in misery…
I thought against publishing this post but am glad I did it now. “best things in life happen without planning” <– that came from realizing how unplanned this blog is and all that it's allowing me to do.
Thanks for dropping by Karen!
As always, Moon, great post. I’m having the same debate with myself right now whether I want to start my own Lifestyle Design / Passive Income blog. It seems like there is already so much noise out there in the space, yet I find that I’m reading yours and nodding my head, and saying “I should be doing that!” On the other hand, I could start a blog about a totally different passion/hobby (songwriting, violin, etc) that I’m interested in and try to be in that space. So many options! Keep up the great work, and best of luck with your move! Is your mini affiliate site profitable yet, or still tweaking?
Ethan´s last blog ..Broken Arches EP: What I’ve Been Up To
Thanks Ethan. I’ll never discourage anyone from following their passions. Just because Amazon exists doesn’t mean other online retailers shouldn’t exist… right? True, passive income/lifestyle design seems to be a bit crowded but perhaps you can carve out your own angle.
How’s your site doing, btw? (The sales page).
If you want to make money online, then start a blog or affiliate site not related to this market. Though I hope to make a little bit of money from ads on this site, I don’t plan on making majority of my income here. Personally, I don’t like making money by teaching others how to make money. At least, not until I am entirely comfortable with it at some point. I like how Glen’s doing it.
As for my mini affiliate site, nope, not yet! It wasn’t ranking in Google well but it’s doing much, much better today. This keyphrase only gets about a 1000 hits a month, which isn’t a lot. It’d be interesting to see how much, if any, money I make. I also have to see if can define my “call to action” better.
So much to learn!
Let me know if I can help you Ethan.
LOL. It’s a lot of damn work! And its getting a bit easier now after 3 years. LOL. I’ve decided only to post Tue/Thur/Sun. And Sun will be my main post. Now I am looking for other ways to expand – experiment to take place on Sunday’s post. Hope you give me your feedback.
But what’s better, Cubicle or Working for Self? Hmmmm…. that’s a hard one!
Adam, Man vs. Debt, has a great post today. Check out #7.

Christine,
I considered changing my schedule from M/W/F to Th/F but I’ll see how it goes for a couple more months. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time and want to create super useful posts. 3 years huh? Whoa, you’ve got some experience under that belt of yours!
I’ll definitely give you some feedback, now you’ve got me curious. I hope I can kick some ass work for myself. Whee! I’m high thinking about it.
It’s 3 years piddling as a blog for hobby. Only recently (<1 yr) that I have toyed it with updating it to a Business and getting to know more about SEO. Know anything about filing an LLC? I need to do it before June to claim business status on my taxes.
Money Funk´s last blog ..In The Trenches: Financial Survival During Times of Hardship
Christine, I haven’t setup an LLC yet but I need to do it soon as well. I do remember John (from Passive Family Income) posting about it since he recently went through the process. I’m sure you can get a lot of info from him.
You may as well take that step!
Every day is going to be my last day, my final post and then I pick up my laptop and carry on with my dreams. Blogging somehow gets in your blood and won’t quit you even though sometimes the effort seems more than we get out of it.
Ms. Freeman@Baby Steps of an Internet Entrepreneur´s last blog ..The Secrets to Selling Online
Ms. Freeman, you’re right about that. Only I know I’m not going to quit, I’m just not stressing about it anymore. Seems like a natural flow lately.
I totally hear you
God, blog, social networking, yada, yada, is so time intensive and it’s like an addiction. So much so when you get off the highs, like a low, you want to ditch the whole thing.
I never knew having a blog and trying to start an online business would be so emotionally draining.
Simone´s last blog ..What I learnt from starting an online business that I was not passionate about.
Simone, you nailed it. I need to get better with the emotional rollercoaster rides. Anxiety sucks!
One of the best sayings I have read recently was “someday never comes”. If we keep planning for future ventures and putting it off it will more than likely never manifest itself. I always like to tell my friends that we need to Keep It Moving, because if we remain stagnant we will concede to ordinary. Planning often gets in the way, and doing something is always better than doing nothing at all.
Best of luck!

Nell, nothing wrong with planning but most people get stuck there. They don’t plan by using action-able steps… that’s right, keep it moving.

Hi Moon,
I love this article. If I have known the amount of effort needed to run a blog, I will not start it in the first place too. It surely takes a huge chunk of our time to make it work and I love the advice you gave; stop planning for the future, do it now. This advice works for everybody.
Cheers,
Vincent

All the “research” and planning I did 6 months ago isn’t relevant to me now so why did I stress so much then?
Who knows; I’m learning as I go.
Well said Moon! Each time I just I tend not to regret it… websites and blogs included… If you’re curious about something try it!
p.s. – 3.500 comments – impressive!

I’m a novice blogger so these tips reassure that it’s a long road uphill to get to my goals. I’ll try very hard not to quit. I won’t quit anytime soon
You’re so right about how different professionals can be making money online, and I’m one of them. However, first, I’m learning about this blogging world…and hopefully, I’ll have something set up very soon.

Usman, keep all the advice in your mind and remember to take action! That’s the only way you’ll ever know
Hey Moon – I’ve also thought about this and how I would never have even tried to earn passive online income had I known what I would be up against. But now, I’m glad that I had no idea what was involved or else I would never have made it this far (which isn’t very far, but much farther than where I started from).
I like your attitude about the blog, not worrying about every single aspect and just taking it one day at a time. It’s too easy to stand in our own way of progress by comparing our blogs to those of other people and constantly finding fault with our design, content, etc.
Earl´s last blog ..The Attack Of The Airport Touts
You’ve got it Earl! Like I said, we kill our dreams before we ever take any sort of action. It’s a shame really and I’ll think twice before I do that with my future ideas.
Hi There Moon!
We definitely know what you mean too. You start out thinking that you’ll do fine, but as time wears on you start to feel the pressure. It’s hard to see your stats and see that you aren’t getting very many views at all.
I’m glad to see that you have found the value in passive income. The world wants everyone fixated on a big round number in the future, and so much so that everyone neglects passive income streams! Keep up the great work, and continue to persevere. It looks like it is paying off well!
Thanks,

Thanks for dropping by and hope to see you around.
@Moon,
Am glad to find people with blogs similar to mine and documenting every step of their journey.
Well, even if I knew that this internet marketing is tough I would still get involved! I just can’t stand working the same amount of hours for others coz it sucks!
All the best
