Bookmarking Demon: Helpful Social Bookmarking Software or Bust?
In the last few weeks, I posed the question: Is social bookmarking the missing key in the ranking game? To answer this question, I turned to a well-known automated social bookmarking software: Bookmarking Demon. I purchased Bookmarking Demon [affiliate link] over 6 months ago but never tested it properly. Let’s start with the basics:
What Exactly Is Bookmarking Demon?
Created by Edwin, Bookmarking Demon is a software that allows you to create multiple accounts at various social bookmarking sites and essentially bookmark websites/blogs/links to those accounts en masse. As you know, the Google gods favour a site when a good number of people socially bookmark it. Think about it: if 10 people “dugg” your blog, if another 15 stumbled upon your latest blog post, this not only looks good in peoples’ eyes (exposure) but now search engines can consider this as a thumbs up for your site and give it a better ranking. That’s my understanding, at least.
Bookmarking Demon 5 comes with a list of a 100 social bookmarking sites. Some of the main social bookmarking sites in the list are mixx.com, stumbleupon.com, fark.com, and more.
Let’s consider some concerns regarding using this automated social bookmarking tool.
Pros
When “done right”, using this software could save you hours and hours of daily work. Without such a software, I would have to manually create accounts at various social bookmark sites, activate the accounts, manually bookmark my sites (and hopefully other sites as to not resemble a spam account). If I was to do this for even 50 different social bookmarking site, the process could be tedious.
With Bookmarking Demon [affiliate link]? Not so bad. Let me be clear: it’s not fun work. However, this software takes what could take me hours a day and helps me do it within 30 minutes.
Cons
Social bookmarking sites do the best they can to get rid of spammy accounts. What if after creating 100 or a 1000 backlinks, I lose them all? This is always a concern.
To prevent that from happening, let’s take some precautions:
No matter what tools you use to create backlinks (whether it’s you doing it yourself, automated social bookmarking software or article spinning software), it depends on the strategy you use. If you create 2 accounts and bookmark only your own sites for both accounts, sooner or later that will throw up a red flag. However, if you can create 5 serious accounts and bookmark your sites plus other valuable content on a daily basis, you should be fine.
So, big nono: creating 500 backlinks in one day [or so I hear. I should test this
].
Hopefully, to begin with, you haven’t chosen such a competitive keyword that the sites/blogs that dominate already have thousands of backlinks. If you need to create 500 backlinks, break up the endeavor on a daily basis over two months (or whatever feels reasonable).
If my goal is to create 300 backlinks, then I’d probably break this up into a month and create 10 backlinks a day. Some could argue that that’s a lot of links to create in a month but I have no proof of any implications resulting from this (this would be an excellent experiment to conduct however!)
Keep in mind that when you bookmark your sites/blog/posts, throw in 3-4 other “regular” links. The idea is to blend your link in with the others, thereby creating a regular account. I would go as far as saying to keep building on these accounts every few days.
Also, something else to be careful about is to not submit the same description (for your site blog) for a bookmark created at each bookmarking site. When users submit a site on these social bookmarking sites, each user gives a unique description. Bookmarking Demon supports “spinner” characters to allow a bit of variation with your descriptions. For instance:
“This {post|entry} is full of {excellent|good|awesome} details regarding BMD software”.
If the above sentence is entered into the description field, the software will randomly choose the variations of the above sentence when actually submitting, meaning it could be one of the following variations:
“This post is full of excellent details regarding BMD software” or
“This entry is full of good details regarding BMD software”
….and so on. You get the picture.
One last thing to consider: while the software provides you with a decent number of social bookmarking sites, you only want to target the reputable ones. Ten links from Mixx or StumbleUpon will be much more valuable then a hundred from unknown, smaller bookmarking sites.
Again, to summarize:
- Create backlinks slow and steady on a daily basis
- Bookmark other peoples’ content when bookmarking your own (3 links to your 1 link)
- Allow some variation in the “summary” or “description” of the site your submitting
- Focus on the “big” social bookmarking sites
Check out what bay37 had to say regarding Bookmarking Demon:
“Hey,
What SB software are you using? I can tell from my own experience that tools such as Bookmarking Demon don’t help much with rankings. Most pros only use BMD for fast indexing, that’s it.
You want to use quality, aged SB accounts at well known sites. I have a custom coded bot that automates SB submissions to 100 do-follow social sites – it works wonders, believe me! I may release a “smaller” version publicly sometime in the future.
What I suggest you do when it comes to SB; pick out 20-30 do follow, high PR social sites, then use roboform or a similar tool to help you create accounts.
Submit 1-2 “dummy” bookmarks to each site at first, then start bookmarking your own sites. It’ll take ~an hour to run through 25-30 sites, but it’s time well spent, believe me. SB accounts become more valuable as they age.
Don’t bother with automated stuff that doesn’t properly work. 20 quality SBs > 200 bookmarks on “meh” sites.”
bay37 offers excellent advice here and this is a strategy I am considering. However, I still want to test Bookmarking Demon and see if it can be of use to me.
In Summary…
This is only an introduction to the Bookmarking Demon. The idea was to introduce to you what this software is capable of and to use it on a daily basis to create backlinks over the course of a month. In the next few weeks, I will dissect the results from this experiments and will provide more useful tips on how to use this software effectively to get the most out of it.
If you have used a similar software, please share your experience.

Hi! My name is Moon Hussain and I'm here to share all the strategies that I'll be experimenting with to earn passive income.
The problem, as you mentioned, is that you still need to bookmark other people’s content, so it is using up a bit of your time. I’d prefer building up a large following and having dedicated readers do it for me, as it takes up less time and tells me if my content is valuable to the people who matter – my readers.
Great post!
Joe, you’re right about it taking up quite a bit of time. It definitely does. What you’re saying is the ultimate way to go, but let me ask you this: what about a mini-site that is centered around an affiliate program? It is definitely something people are looking for. I don’t need to necessarily build a following for it, as it is not a blog like this one, I’d just like to rank it high in the search engines so that people can buy it through my mini-site and I earn the commission.
Hey Moon,
Nice Post. I don’t like the idea of using bookmarking demon, instead i would like to spend my time on building large followers base.
Anyways, Thanks for sharing this great Post.
New Design is really looking cool. Great work.

Dev, I wouldn’t do it for EIP either, but I’m playing with building my ranking for my mini-sites that offer products. I need to build backlinks to rank in search engines, hence BMD.
Thanks for dropping by.
Forgot about the design. Dev, glad you like it. It’s definitely unique and stands on its own. I love it!
Moon, this sounds an interesting experiment. I look forward to hearing more about your progress.

..backlinks for MoneyFunk or your other sites? Thanks! I really like it myself
I have 27K+ inbound links, but I need more. >:) Muahaha… If you look at Wisebread’s Top 100+ PF lists you’ll see those ranking high have oodles of inbound links.
Of course, I don’t want a bunch of spam backlinks. But I think I need to pay more attention to what gets caught by akismet and approve those that are worthy. I think I’ve overlooked a lot that could have been used.

Christine, 27k quality links is ridiculously awesome. No, you want quality links for sure. I”m using BMD more for my mini-affiliate sites. You may as well invest in guest posting for some quality links
Oh yeah, I go through my askismet filter and 99% of the time, it’s just spam. I wonder how many true comments you’ve lost, betcha not much!
Hey,
Let us know how your experiment goes.
Thanks for the honest review Moon,
I’ve actually had this on my radar for some time, sounds like it’s well worth it.
Although I don’t think I’d use it on my flagship blogs, it would be really helpful when launching niche websites and simple blogs you want to rank well.

Murlu, I’ll see if it pays off within a month or two. It’ll probably work well with something like UAW, which I’m testing as well
i am presently using “onlywire”, cost about $40 per month for 2500 submissions, and is pretty slow, but maybe they are keeping me out of trouble, as I have about 750 sites, and have never had hardly any traffic, 400 of the sites are adsense, w/no money $100 in about 7 months last year,
Jimmy, first, glad to hear from you.
But let me ask: did you really mean 750 websites? That’s a whole lot of sites! If each website earned a $1.00 a month, you should be able to earn $750 easily. But something doesn’t seem right. Have you reviewed your sites to see what’s going wrong in the process?
