4 Easy Ways to Promote Your Passive Income Stream Grass Roots Style!

We spend a lot of time thinking of the perfect product, hiring helpers, putting up a sales site. When all that is done, the adrenaline rush kind of wears off and then you sit there and go, “Uh, now what?” After reading John’s informative articles about his $5 Mini-Site experiment, I was reminded of where I had faltered in my previous experiments.
The two times that I’ve actually put together sites to sell affiliate products, I never properly promoted them. Sure, the second time I tried my hand at an ad campaign, which didn’t go anywhere. Perhaps we’re all relying too much on Google. Not to knock down Google because I think CPC is amazing but maybe it’s too quick of a solution. I don’t want to get in the habit of gaining traffic by “throwing money at it”. Maybe we’re better off promoting our products (this could work for affiliate products, whatever you’re trying to sell), if we drive the traffic ourselves! Imagine that, hard work, the good old fashioned way. [Note: Passive income stream here means affiliate product, your own product, niche site, whatever project you're working on that needs some sort of promotion].
In how many ways can we promote niche websites/affiliate products/your own product, you ask?
1. Article Marketing
Don’t groan! I know you are because I would do the same. The proof is in the pudding, or well, John’s $5 niche website experiment. He hired a ghost writer to write 27 articles for article marketing websites. His goal is to earn ~$500/month from his niche site ($16.67/day); in his third week, he has earned $16.16. I can imagine his efforts are only going to pay off more as the site and the promotion articles mature. Why not follow a strategy that seems to be working? I will add that if you’re only going to create 2 or 3 articles, then, you may as well not bother.
2. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!
This one can only be applied to your own product. If you have created an ebook or a product, why not “give a few copies” to bloggers in the industry? Surely, while doing a bit of research for the ebook you have made a few contacts, or maybe you read a popular blog or two in the related industry. Make sure your product is tight, be proud, and arrange a few reviews. You will create ridiculous exposure for your product. Hear that humming? That’s the buzz your product is creating
3. eHow/Squidoo Campaigns
This kind of relates to article promotion but is a category on its own and rightly so. Do you know how many people use these types of websites and how many of those articles actually rank? eHow policies might have changed as not to allow affiliate links (I have to edit my articles if true), but don’t write articles here for that purpose (to sell products). Write them to gain an audience. Create the article(s) and post them in the site’s forum.
4. Craigslist
I can’t help but add this one in. I’ve never dedicated much time to Craigslist but so many people do. Why not create an ad there and experiment? I’m not saying that you should create spam; try to offer a solution to people, in the form of your product/niche site/blog, whatever it happens to be.
Let Me Wrap This Up For You
So, let’s talk about the “easy” part. That “easy” part depends on you. There is nothing easy about writing 20+ promotion articles for article marketing and then a couple for other sites like Squidoo. Do yourself a huge favour and hire a writer through Guru or another site. I hired a writer to create eHow articles (20 articles for about $50, around 300 words). He’s a good writer and has saved me a lot of time. Make sure you find a good writer who knows what SEO is! I cannot stress that enough. I will now continue to use him for my eHow articles and article promotion for my new niche site.
I will be trying the above mentioned “grass roots” style promotion for my new niche site and will report back the results. I hope to encounter positive results as John is!
Have you tried any of the above grass roots style promotion(s)? What kind of success have you had? Please share any tips!

Hi! My name is Moon Hussain and I'm here to share all the strategies that I'll be experimenting with to earn passive income.
Interesting article. I have given a few of these methods a shot and they do seem to work for passive income. My articles are always getting views and will be for years to come, thats what I like about article marketing. I normally focus on immediate traffic (such as guest blogging) but perhaps I’ll try some more passive marketing for awhile. After-all, thats the best way to grow a sustainable business.

Paul,
What type of income streams do you have setup? Like you said, guest blogging is for immediate traffic, probably best to delve into some article marketing promotion until you can gain rank in Google or another search engine.
Great post Moon. These are all things I’d like to venture into one of these days. I’ve never thought of myself as someone who would want to or could write articles… but now I know I can just outsource it…

Adrienne,
In all honesty, it’s pretty draining for me to write 20-40 promotion articles and now that I’ve hired a ghost writer, I know I can work with him again. That in itself, is awesome because now I can move a bit quicker and not feel weighed down (not as much at least) after work and on the weekends.
Moon,
I’ve not tried many of these but I think creating your own product or affiliate sales is a good strategy to shoot for. It’s honest work that will definitely pay off in the end.
I don’t blame you about hiring a writer to do articles and such as that would take too much out of anyone!

You’ve got it, Eric. I think it’s essential to outsource tasks that you’d hate doing, as that pulls you further away from your goal in the long run.
Yes though sometimes it’s better to experiment with doing the tasks you hate first I think. That way what you WANT to do is left TO do.
Just a thought.

Hey – Great list, especially #1 (although I am a little bias)! I really want to approach #2 next, I just seem to keep putting if off.
John´s last blog ..eHow Passive Income Results – February (2010)
John, by #2, you mean have the product reviewed by bloggers? I wasn’t aware that you have your own product out…? Back to the point though, that’s one hell of a way to create buzz for your product. Go for it
Keep us updated!
I write my own articles if they are posted to a site and my name is attached. But I also do outsource quite a bit of article promotion. Im rally just getting started with Article marketing (to promote an ebook) but things are already looking promising.
I’ve also used Squidoo. Was very successor with it at one point and then Google decided not to like my top ranking lenses.
Anthony Feint´s last blog ..Is Your Business Becoming a Chore?
Anthony, I’m in total agreement there. If you’re writing a guest post, you’d better do your own work. If it’s for eHow or promotion articles for online directories, I would much rather another writer take care of that.
Maybe you can track how many ebooks you’re selling? It would be cool to see your strategies paying off. I can’t seem to embrace Squidoo, no matter how hard I try. Maybe try tweaking those articles? Or get opinions in the forum?
These are really great resource, I am in the process of created yet another ‘product’ and will need to find alternative way to promote it. Squidoo has been on my list for a long time to get done. That will be my project this weekend as well.
Great tips!

Ms. Freeman,
So you already have a product? How did it work out before? Cool, hope you give us more details about it!
Hey Moon,
Another good promotional tool is of course seeking out affiliates.
Simply emailing dozens of websites in my niche has led to them promoting my product and sending me traffic. Sometimes simply putting your eProduct up on a site such as Clickbank.com results in hundreds of affiliates promoting your product within a week. Sure, the affiliates receive commission for the sales they send you but they’re sending you traffic without you having to spend any of your own money. So it’s well worth it in the end!
Earl´s last blog ..The Joy of Booking a Flight
Earl, that’s an fine idea. I haven’t thought about Clickbank in general. I’ve often checked out products there to promote but it seems that a decent number have bad reviews. Guess I gotta weed out the good stuff.
As long as sales are being made, you win and the affiliate wins.
Wow 20 articles for $50… Cheap!
Ryan @ Planting Dollars´s last blog ..Waikiki Site – Adding WordPress and Thesis Theme via FTP to Bluehost
That is pretty cheap, Ryan! These articles were for eHow, so about ~300 words in general and good quality so far. I’m hiring him again for my next project.
